Zurich’s General Music Director Gianandrea Noseda and the Zurich Opera Orchestra, together with an outstanding cast, treat the audience to a musically magnificent moment, a Sternstunde as the locals would put it. Noseda lives and breathes Verdi’s score, the orchestra follows him with laser precision, with depth and emphasis, forceful yet light, with playful vigour. But they are never rushed. Conductor and orchestra are in perfect balance with the on-stage cast who make the most of the instrumental foundation supporting them from the pit. [...] La forza del destino is a challenge for any production team. This Zurich ensemble has run the gauntlet to great effect. Still, in the end it was the music that carried the evening for me. Gianandrea Noseda domina la compagine orchestrale con precisione assoluta, muovendosi, da par suo, nelle pieghe di una partitura dove l’aspetto sinfonico è a tratti preponderante, a cominciare dalla presenza, ossessiva, del Leitmotiv del destino, che tra oscure volute di suono sembra trascinare le vicende dei personaggi in un vortice più grande di loro: quello della guerra e della storia. Il coro, a tratti vero protagonista dell’opera, rispetta sempre i tempi, elemento fondamentale (e non scontato) all’interno di una scrittura musicale articolata.
Pubblico delle grandi occasioni, teatro gremito e applausi scroscianti per tutti.

Gianandrea Noseda am Pult des Orchesters der Oper Zürich präsentiert ein leidenschaftliches, eindringliches Dirigat, das durch grosse emotionale Intensität besticht. Mit flexiblen wie atmenden Tempi folgt er den dramatischen Bögen dieser Partitur auf die grösstmögliche organische Weise. Noseda gelingt eine gute Balance zwischen den schwungvollen und lyrischen Momenten in dieser fast dreistündigen Oper. Die klanglichen Differenzierungen in den Details kommen genauso zum Tragen wie die vielen Stimmungswechsel im mehrfach überarbeiteten Opus. Das Premierenpublikum honoriert die gesangliche wie orchestrale Leistung mit starkem Applaus und wiederholten Bravorufen.
