After
more than 15 years of committed work with and for the music of the 18th
and of late also early 19th century the self-organized CONCERTO KÖLN
has acquired a unique profile. "Nonconform and brilliant,
passionate and above all endearingly spontaneous" thus was the
praise of the Prize of the German Critics 1995 about the style of
music-making by the young orchestra CONCERTO KÖLN which was founded in
1985 and plays on period instruments. In the meantime it has become one
of the leading early-music ensembles. The musicians perform in all
famous European concert halls as well as in North America and at all
well-known European Music festivals. They prove, also as and
opera-orchestra, e.g. regularly at the State Opera "Unter den
Linden" Berlin, in Aix-en-Provence under the direction of René
Jacobs, how exciting baroque and pre-classical opera can be. The highly
acclaimed CDs are published in the reputed series "Das Alte
Werk" of TELDEC CLASSICS INTERNATIONAL, where CONCERTO KÖLN has
had an exclusive contract since 1994.
In 1992 the ensemble founded the "Festtage Alte
Musik" with the help of DeutschlandRadio. With such interesting
topics as "Joseph Martin Kraus", "Luigi Boccherini and
the Spanish Classicism", "Gaetano Brunetti", "Pietro
Antonio Locatelli", "Antonio Rosetti" ,"Johann
Baptist Vanhal" and "Evaristo Felice Dall'Abaco" the
festival has developed step by step into an ideal and highly acclaimed
platform for the presentation of the newest musical discoveries by
CONCERTO KÖLN. The "Festtage Alte Musik" 2001 will be devoted
to the "Emergence of Romanticism" with particular emphasis on
the works of Anton Eberl, a contemporary of Mozart and Beethoven.
The CD's of CONCERTO KÖLN regularly receive
international prices as e. g. the "Cannes Classical Award",
the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik", the
"Diapason d'Or and the "10 de Répertoire" and gain
enthusiastic approval in the musical press. So the New York Times wrote
in its review almost lovingly about "those wonderful
early-musickers in Cologne". In 2001 the CD with symphonies by
Anton Eberl won the Caecilia price and the "Echo Klassik"
price.
Above all the special kind of working, rehearsing and
making music is a basis of this success. Apart from the artistic
director, Werner Ehrhardt, each musician can bring in his own ideas to
the actual working process. The interpretation of each piece is done
together, everyone is responsible, the outcome is the result of common
aim. The audience can really feel this during the concerts. This
specific expression of "concertare" will remain the character
of CONCERTO KÖLN in the future.
