The
internationally-renowned SCHOENBERG ENSEMBLE was formed in the Hague,
Holland in 1974 by Reinbert de Leeuw.
Its repertoire, rooted in the performance of the
complete chamber music of the three most important composers of the
Second Viennese School - Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern
- has gradually branched out into the entire 20th century.
Since the foundation Reinbert de Leeuw is the chief
conductor of the Schoenberg Ensemble.
The Schoenberg Ensemble plays in the most prestigious concert halls and
major festivals throughout all the countries in Europe, Canada and the
United States.
The ensemble performs frequently on radio and
television and records for Philips, Deutsche Grammophon, Koch-Schwann,
Auvidis Montaigne (Paris) and Elektra Nonesuch (New York).
CD's with works of Olivier Messiaen and Mauricio Kagel have been
released at Auvidis Montaigne. On Philips Classics CD's, works of the
Russian female composers Sofia Gubaidulina and Galina Ustvolskaja, the
Polish composer Henryk Górecki and the Canadian composer Claude Vivier
have been released. Elektra Nonesuch label has released a CD with
"De Materie" of Louis Andriessen.
Many composers dedicated works to the Schoenberg
Ensemble. Among them Isang Yun, Morton Feldman, Sofia Gubaidulina,
Henryk Górecki, Louis Andriessen, Klaas de Vries and Mauricio Kagel.
