Founded in 1984, the Basel Chambre
Orchestra (Kammerorchester Basel, KOB) is now one of the most
soughtafter international chamber orchestras. The KOB has made the lively
interpretation and skilful juxtaposition of Early Music and modern music
to its trademark. The ensemble doesn’t have a principal conductor as
such. Every member has an equal say on artistic decisions; but the KOB
works together regularly with such well-known conductors as Christopher
Hogwood, Giovanni Antonini, Paul Goodwin, Paul McCreesh and David Stern.
The KOB has appeared at many international music festivals such as the
Rheingau and Schwetzingen Festivals, the Munich “Tonikale”, the
Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Folles Journées Nantes, Festa de
Musica in Lisbon, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, the Istanbul Music
Festival, the International Festival at Lake Constance, the “AnsBACHwoche”,
the Handel Festival in Halle an der Saale, the Festival La Chaise- Dieu,
and the Vienna “Klangbogen”). In the coming concert season, the KOB will
appear in many of Europe’s leading music centres: Paris, London, Vienna,
Prague, Budapest, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne, Munich,
Stuttgart, Zurich, Madrid, Valencia, Lisbon and Istanbul. In the 2005/06
season the orchestra is looking forward to working with such major
artists as Cecilia Bartoli, Magdalena Kozena, Sol Gabetta, Patricia
Kopatchinskaya, the Labèque sisters, Tabea Zimmermann, David Daniels,
Felix Renggli, Andrew Manze and Giuliano Carmignola.
In 1999 the Basel Chamber Orchestra
performed for the first time with his conductor Christopher Hogwood.
This collaboration was so productive and stimulating for both parties
that Christopher Hogwood was engaged as „Principal Guest Conductor“ for
the following years.
Through the partnership with the BMG/Arte Nova-label a collaboration has
been established which unites programmes with a thematic focus as well
as an emphasis on contemporary classics. The first CD produced together
in autumn 2001was a programme from 1947 in which the music-patron of
Basel Paul Sacher and the then Basel Chamber Orchestra premiered works
by Strawinsky, Martinu and Honegger. The second CD was released in
September 2002 with unknown pieces by Britten and Strawinsky. The singer
Emma Kirkby performs extracts of “Rakes progress” and Shakespear-songs
by Strawinsky. The third CD presents neo classicism with an Italian
background (Casella, Malipiero, Strawinsky). In September 2004 was
released the new serial "Music for the theatre" contains works by
Richard Strauss and Georges Bizet. In November 2005 comes the second CD
with "American Theatre Music" by Copland and Barber.
The Oehmsclassics label has produced
the first recording of Handels "Lotario" last year. In November 2005 KOB
and Oehmsclassics launch a new composite recording of Beethovens
Symphonies with Giovanni Antonini. Further CDs in this series are
planned for each year.
